For an experienced Orthopedic Doctor & Orthopedic Surgeon (more than 5 years of experience), there is usually a standard academic education path in most countries, including India. Here are the typical educational qualifications required:
1. Basic Medical Degree
• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
• Duration: About 5.5 years (including internship).
• This is the primary medical degree required to become a doctor.
2. Postgraduate Specialization in Orthopedics
After MBBS, the doctor must specialize in orthopedics through one of these:
• Doctor of Medicine (Orthopedics) (MD Orthopedics)
• or
• Master of Surgery (Orthopedics) (MS Orthopedics)
or
• Diplomate of National Board (Orthopedics) (DNB Orthopedics)Duration: 3 years
3. Optional Super-Specialization (Not always required)
Some orthopedic surgeons pursue additional fellowships such as:
• Joint Replacement Fellowship
• Spine Surgery Fellowship
• Sports Medicine Fellowship
• Trauma Surgery Fellowship
These usually take 1–2 years.
4. Medical Registration
The doctor must be registered with:
