Lenovo is building the next generation of intelligent device experiences powered by Qira, our cross‑device Personal AI platform. We are hiring an OS System Design Lead to drive architecture, system design, and technical execution across OS‑level components, including HAL, middleware, system services, and embedded runtime layers across Linux, Android, Windows, and RTOS‑based systems.
This is a senior individual contributor role, focused on high‑impact technical leadership rather than people management. You will define system architecture, guide platform evolution, and collaborate across Lenovo and Motorola engineering organizations to deliver robust, scalable, and secure system components that form the foundation of our AI‑driven device ecosystem.
What You’ll Do
• Lead system architecture and design across multi‑OS environments (Linux, Android, Windows, RTOS) with a focus on HAL, middleware, and system‑service layers.
• Architect and develop embedded software components, native services, and OS‑level abstractions that expose consistent capabilities across devices.
• Drive integration of system components with vendor HALs, silicon‑specific interfaces, and low‑level drivers across multiple platforms.
• Perform deep performance engineering, including profiling, latency optimization, memory tuning, and power‑aware system design.
• Lead cross‑layer technical investigations spanning frameworks, system services, IPC paths, native daemons, HALs, and kernel interfaces.
• Partner with silicon vendors and internal platform teams to define requirements, troubleshoot issues, and optimize end‑to‑end system behavior.
• Develop high‑quality design documentation, technical specifications, and architectural guidance for internal engineering teams.
• Serve as a technical mentor and thought‑leader—driving engineering excellence, establishing best practices, and elevating system‑design capabilities across the organization (IC leadership only).
Basic Qualifications
• 10+ years of hands-on experience in OS level engineering, HAL/middleware development, or embedded system software across one or more platforms (Linux, Android, Windows, RTOS).
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required.
• Deep understanding of framework ↔ system service ↔ HAL ↔ driver interactions and layered OS architecture.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded/system programming and familiarity with platform‑relevant languages such as Java/Kotlin, C#, or Rust.
• Demonstrated experience designing and shipping system‑level or embedded software components on consumer devices such as phones, tablets, PCs, or IoT/embedded products.
• Expertise in performance tuning, including profiling tools, memory analysis, scheduling behavior, and power/thermal optimization.
• Proven ability to independently lead cross‑functional technical initiatives, influence platform design, and drive complex architectural decisions.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate product and platform requirements into robust, scalable system designs.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with HAL/system‑service design across multiple operating systems.
• Strong familiarity with vendor integrations.
• Background in enabling or optimizing system‑level AI capabilities (sensor pathways, runtime flows, I/O pipelines).
• Experience with updatable or modular system components, such as Android APEX/Mainline or equivalent on Linux/Windows.
• Deep debugging experience across native services, IPC paths, HAL boundaries, kernel interfaces, and driver interactions.
• Passion for clean system abstractions, OS‑level craftsmanship, and building foundational software that scales across diverse hardware and OS environments.
