Social Media Manager, One Small Step/Brightness In Black Division: Marketing & Communications Department: Marketing & Communications Location: Remote Travel Percentage: up to 5% Reports To: Managing Director of Marketing, Engagement and Communication Status: Full-Time/Initiative-Funded/Exempt/Non-Union Salary: $71,000 - $75,000 THE ROLE StoryCorps is seeking a creative, strategic, and collaborative Social Media Manager to lead and grow the social presence of two distinct but values-aligned initiatives: One Small Step and Brightness in Black. This role will split time evenly between managing the established One Small Step social media channels and launching and building the Brightness in Black social media presence from the ground up. While consulting closely with both program teams, this role will report centrally to the Director of Marketing Engagement & Communications, ensuring alignment with StoryCorps’ broader brand, audience, and engagement goals. WHAT YOU’LL DO One Small Step (50%) • Develop and manage the social media strategy for One Small Step, and execute the day-to-day across platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok). • Develop a compelling content strategy that amplifies participant stories, promotes national and local engagement opportunities, and reflects the initiative’s mission to foster connection across differences. • Work with the content creator/editor to promote content that reflects and strengthens the One Small Step brand. Collaborate with the One Small Step team to translate program goals, campaigns, and moments into effective social storytelling. • Plan and manage editorial calendars, ensuring timely, relevant, and consistent posting. • Monitor performance, track metrics, and provide regular insights and recommendations to optimize reach, engagement, and participation. • Engage with the One Small Step community by responding to comments, messages, and relevant conversations in a thoughtful and mission-aligned way. • Create basic content as needed, with advanced work handled by the video editor. Brightness in Black (50%) • Lead the launch and development of Brightness in Black’s social media presence, including channel strategy, tone, visual direction, and content strategy. • Work closely with the Brightness in Black team to define social goals, audience segments, and storytelling priorities. • Work with the content creator/editor to promote content that reflects and strengthens the Brightness in Black brand while centering Black joy in an authentic, bold, and engaging way. • Establish workflows, posting cadence, and best practices for a new brand on social media. • Grow and nurture an engaged audience from the ground up through organic strategies, partnerships, trends, and community interaction. • Track and analyze performance, using insights to refine strategy as the channels evolve. • Engage with the Brightness in Black community by responding to comments, messages, and relevant conversations in a thoughtful and mission-aligned way. • Create basic content as needed, with advanced work handled by the video editor. Cross-functional & Strategic Responsibilities • Serve as a thought partner and social media expert to both initiative teams, translating organizational and programmatic goals into effective social strategies. • Ensure consistency with StoryCorps’ overall brand values while honoring the distinct identities of One Small Step and Brightness in Black. • Collaborate with designers, writers, video producers, and external partners as needed. • Stay current on social media trends, platform updates, and emerging best practices, especially as they relate to storytelling, social impact, and community-building. • Manage Brightness in Black and One Small Step social media ad campaigns, coordinating digital ad copy, creative, and content with the external agency. • 5% of the job is dedicated to travel. • Perform other duties to support Marketing & Communications as assigned. ABOUT YOU Required: • 4-6 years of experience managing social media for a brand, nonprofit, media organization, or cultural initiative. • Demonstrated experience growing and engaging audiences on multiple social platforms. • Strong editorial judgment and storytelling instincts, with an ability to adapt tone and style for different audiences and brands. • Experience launching new social channels or brands is strongly preferred. • Comfort working collaboratively across teams while managing multiple priorities. • Data-informed mindset with experience using analytics to guide strategy. • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills • Solid organization skills, multi-tasking ability, and attention to detail • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to contribute to problem-solving activities within a growing, changing organization • Cultural competence/humility and the ability to thrive in a work environment Preferred: • Experience with mission-driven, nonprofit, or social impact organizations. Familiarity with short-form video strategy and trends. • Experience engaging communities online in thoughtful and culturally responsive ways.
