Full Stack Engineer - (Audio & Interaction) | AI Lab

As a member of the new AI Lab at The Economist Group, your role will be essential in prototyping and delivering early experiences that incorporate AI models into user-facing tools, particularly web and mobile interfaces. Your contributions will directly impact how millions of readers engage with journalism and help in reimagining The Economist's journalism for an AI-driven world. ### Key Responsibilities: - Build interactive prototypes showcasing LLM capabilities in mobile and web environments, such as chat and audio interfaces, with a focus on high-fidelity, code-based prototypes for user testing and internal demos. - Implement voice interaction flows in both mobile and web platforms. - Collaborate closely with the Design Lead to explore innovative interaction paradigms and integrate Figma flows into functional prototypes. - Integrate LLM outputs, voice services, and backend logic into frontend experiences by working with the wider engineering team on AI infrastructure. - Contribute to frontend components and frameworks like React/Next.js and Tailwind to facilitate iteration across projects. - Collaborate with Python-based AI infrastructure and APIs for tasks like running and testing Python scripts, contributing Python components if required, and collaborating across time zones and asynchronous workflows. ### Qualifications Required: - 5+ years of experience in frontend or full-stack development with a strong UX focus. - Proficiency in React, modern JavaScript/TypeScript, and ideally Next.js. - Strong understanding of browser audio APIs and libraries for voice interaction, mobile-first design, and rapid prototyping. - Experience working at the frontend/backend intersection, creating API routes or integrating with LLM endpoints. - Strong communication skills, a collaborative attitude, and experience working closely with product and design teams to prototype ideas. ### Additional Details about The Economist AI Lab: The Economist AI Lab is dedicated to exploring new ideas and possibilities beyond existing AI initiatives and engineering roadmaps.
