Senior Metallurgist / Welding Inspector

We are seeking an experienced metallurgist and welding inspection professional to join our team. This remote contract role focuses on material evaluation, weld inspection, coating assessment, and additive manufacturing quality. The position offers competitive hourly compensation.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate metallographic microstructures and determine material acceptability per relevant standards.

• Review heat‑treatment processes and assess conformity with AMS 2750, ASTM E112, and other specifications.

• Perform weld macro‑etch examinations and apply Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) acceptance criteria.

• Assess industrial coatings against NACE/AMPP and SSPC requirements.

• Analyze additive manufacturing (LPBF) builds and disposition defects using cross‑sectional data.

• Document technically supported accept/reject decisions and provide clear explanations.

Required qualifications

• 8+ years of hands‑on experience making high‑stakes accept/reject decisions on metallographic, weld, coating, or AM data.

• Advanced knowledge of ASTM, AMS, AWS, NADCAP, NACE/AMPP, and SSPC standards.

• Proven expertise in metallographic analysis, heat‑treatment evaluation, weld inspection, and coating assessment.

• Current or prior AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential or equivalent metallurgical certification.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.

Nice to have

• Experience with laser powder‑bed fusion (LPBF) defect mechanisms.

• Familiarity with industry‑specific software for microstructure and coating analysis.

• Ability to mentor junior engineers on inspection best practices.
