Finance Manager

Salary range: €65,000-85,000/annum

You'll be building the accounting function for a bootstrapped business that's scaled fast and stayed profitable the whole way, almost from scratch. You'll own it end to end: bring bookkeeping and VAT compliance in-house and into DATEV, then automate it down to the minimum it needs to be. Bookkeeping is where you start, not where you stay. The goal is a clean, well-documented function that runs itself, so you can spend most of your time on group reporting, consolidation, and the finance work that actually moves the business forward.

What You'll Do 🎯

  • Automate the recurring bookkeeping work down to a fraction of today's hours: integrate spend management and other tools with DATEV, build the rules and API-based connectors that do the work you used to do by hand.
  • Migrate bookkeeping and VAT compliance off external providers into a DATEV environment you design, ending up with clean chart-of-accounts, documentation, and an audit trail you'd defend to any auditor.
  • Own intercompany reconciliation and consolidation across entities, building the foundation the group needs for IFRS as it scales past German GAAP alone.
  • Drive tool setup and integration: connect Payhawk and other feeder systems with DATEV, validate tax and account mappings, design standardized procure-to-pay and expense workflows with clear audit trails, and eliminate duplicate entry and recurring errors through root-cause fixes and targeted automation.
  • Own reporting and advisor coordination by delivering clear, timely financial data within agreed timelines, proactively flag risks and decisions to keep closings, filings, and audits on track, and manage the relationship with external tax advisors.

What You'll Bring 💡

  • Real in-house accounting experience: AR/AP, bank reconciliations, accruals and deferrals, monthly closing, ideally in DATEV Rechnungswesen or a comparable system. Not just invoice prefetching or external advisory.
  • A demonstrated case of taking a process from manual and external to in-house, automated, and yours: migration, chart-of-accounts and VAT code design, SOPs, and a measurable improvement in close speed or data quality.
  • An automation-driven instinct: you look at a manual process and start asking how to remove yourself from it, rather than waiting to be asked.
  • Strong intercompany and multi-entity experience: issuing/booking intercompany invoices, performing monthly reconciliations, and producing audit-ready schedules that support consolidation and group reporting.
  • German GAAP fluency, with no hesitation about IFRS becoming relevant as we scale.
  • Comfort working independently with periodic review, not step-by-step direction. You'll be trusted with real scope early.

What Makes You a Great Fit 🌟

  • Own Everything: You're passionate about in-house accounting, German bookkeeping in DATEV, and building reliable close and compliance processes - and you take full ownership from start to finish.
  • Raise the Bar: You're a natural problem-solver who streamlines workflows, fixes root causes, and implements pragmatic controls and automations that lift data quality and speed.
  • Move Fast: You're adaptable, thrive in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, communicate clearly with stakeholders, and continuously improve how the finance engine runs.
