Global tech hiring demand, 2011–present

Hacker News runs a "Who is hiring?" thread on the first of every month, and a matching "Who wants to be hired?" thread. Counting top-level posts in each gives the longest continuous public record of tech hiring demand and candidate supply that exists — 182 months of it. It skews toward startups and the US, so read it as direction, not as an India number.

The rupee, and why it shows up on a jobs site

A large share of India's tech salaries are funded in dollars — global capability centres, offshore contracts and remote roles for foreign employers all price in USD. When the rupee moves, Indian pay in dollar terms moves with it, even when the CTC on the offer letter does not change.

How this page is built

Job counts come from OnJob's own crawl of company career pages and applicant tracking systems. They count listings open at capture time, which measures standing demand rather than hiring flow.

We deliberately do not plot our own feed over time yet. A feed of currently-open jobs loses roles as they get filled, so charting it by posting date produces a decline that looks like a hiring collapse and is really just listings ageing out. Our own dated series began on 23 July 2026 — see hiring momentum for the part we can already measure honestly. Until it is long enough to mean something, anything here with a time axis comes from a source that already has real history.

Questions

Is the tech job market growing or shrinking right now?

Global tech hiring volume is down 4.2% year on year. The Hacker News "Who is hiring?" thread — the longest continuous public record of tech hiring, running since 2011-03 — carried 437 job posts in 2026-07, against a trailing 12-month average of 492 and an all-time peak of 1,222 in 2017-02. On OnJob's own feed we are tracking 23,938 live listings from 1,336 employers, 5,780 of them in India.

Which Indian cities have the most tech jobs?

By live listing volume on OnJob in July 2026, Bangalore leads with 2,112 open roles, followed by Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune. These are listings open at capture time, so they measure standing demand rather than hiring flow.

How many people are unemployed in India?

India's headline unemployment rate is 4.2% (World Bank, 2025 modelled ILO estimate). Youth unemployment runs far higher at 16.0%, which is the figure that matters most for fresher hiring, against a total labour force of 61.8 Cr people.

What does this monitor measure, and where does the data come from?

This page combines OnJob's own live job feed with free public data sources — flagcdn.com, Frankfurter (European Central Bank), GitHub REST API, Hacker News (Algolia Search API), layoffs.fyi (via frankwang0909/tech-layoff-tracker mirror), npm registry download counts, Stack Exchange API, The Space Devs — Launch Library 2, Wikimedia Pageviews API, World Bank Open Data, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Finance — refreshed on a schedule. Job counts are computed from listings open at capture time. External figures carry their own source and date. We do not draw a trend line from our own feed until enough dated observations exist, because a feed of currently-open jobs decays as roles get filled, and plotting that decay would look like a hiring collapse that never happened.
