Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money.
Min fees. Max ease. Full speed.
Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money.
As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money.
For everyone, everywhere.
More about our mission and what we offer.
Team you will be working with: AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) team! 🎉
The AUP team designs, builds, and operates the preventative and detective controls that monitor transactions and customer activity. If someone tries to use Wise for prohibited activities, we detect it, review it, and take action.
Join us as we shift our strategy from "Policy-First to Risk-Driven" to drive growth. We want to enable all legal activities and minimize friction for legitimate customers, while surgically targeting and neutralizing genuinely illicit, high-risk behaviors.
As the Engineering Lead, you will lead a highly collaborative, cross-functional squad, alongside data scientists, analysts, compliance managers, and designers.
How we work:
We operate with high autonomy, low control, and a belief that the best ideas win. We don’t just hand you a roadmap; you will partner directly with your Product Manager, Compliance Lead, and Lead Data Scientist to define both the product and technical vision for the team.
What will you be working on?
- Risk Detection: Close coverage gaps and scale our detection systems by integrating advanced Machine Learning models and building robust controls to spot AUP violations.
- Supercharge Operations: Architect automated workflows and intuitive internal tooling to reduce the cost per case and median handling times for our operations analysts.
- Own the Architecture: Keep our services highly available, resilient, and secure. You’ll ensure we have the right monitoring, observability, and decoupled architectures to scale alongside Wise's massive global volume.
What do you need?
We are fully aware that it is uncommon for a candidate to have all the skills required, and we fully support everyone in learning new skills with us. We value potential, execution, and enthusiasm as much as existing expertise.
- Engineering Leadership: You have proven experience leading, mentoring, and developing software engineers in an agile environment (either as a Tech Lead or Engineering Manager).
- Strong Technical Roots: You have a solid engineering background with modern languages and an understanding of frontend frameworks (like React and TypeScript).
- Distributed Systems at Scale: You have designed, deployed, and maintained scalable, concurrent microservices in a cloud environment. You understand the tradeoffs of high-throughput message processing and asynchronous workflows.
- Product & Risk Mindset: You don't build tech for the sake of tech. You care about the business impact, understand operational bottlenecks, and can translate complex policy mandates into simple, incremental engineering milestones.
- Excellent Communication: You can easily align engineers, data scientists, and non-technical business partners (like compliance and operations leads) toward a shared technical vision.
Nice to Have:
- Prior experience working in FinTech, Financial Crime (AML, Sanctions, Fraud, or Policy enforcement).
- Experience partnering with Data Scientists to productionalize and scale Machine Learning models.
- Familiarity with Cloud Infrastructure and modern DevOps tooling (AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions).
- Experience building or optimizing high-volume case-management platforms or operational back-office tools.
- You are already a customer of Wise!
For everyone, everywhere. We're people building money without borders — without judgement or prejudice, too. We believe teams are strongest when they are diverse, equitable and inclusive.
We're proud to have a truly international team, and we celebrate our differences.
Inclusive teams help us live our values and make sure every Wiser feels respected, empowered to contribute towards our mission and able to progress in their careers.
