How to become a Senior DevOps Engineer in India

A senior DevOps engineer owns the platform other engineers ship on: the infrastructure-as-code standards, the deployment path, the alerting that wakes people up, and the cloud bill at the end of the month. Indian teams at this level expect incident command during outages and a steady reduction in the manual work everyone else is doing. To get there: Five or more years running production infrastructure, including out-of-hours ownership, master skills like Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS / GCP / Azure, CI/CD pipelines, gain experience through internships or projects, and apply to roles that match your level.

Titles overlap heavily in India, and many postings use them interchangeably. Where the distinction is real, site reliability work centres on error budgets, capacity and the reliability of specific services, while the platform side owns delivery tooling, infrastructure code and developer experience. Both carry production accountability and both expect you to write software.

Platform specialists at this grade typically earn ₹15L–₹25L at services companies and ₹25L–₹45L at product firms, fintechs and capability centres, with on-call allowances on top at some employers. Kubernetes depth, security hardening and demonstrable cloud savings move offers more than a long list of tools on a CV.

Cloud provider certifications still open screening conversations, particularly the associate and professional AWS and Azure tracks, and the Certified Kubernetes Administrator carries real weight. None of them substitute for having run production. Interviewers move quickly to what broke, how you found it, and what you changed so it could not recur.

On-call here means more than acknowledging pages. Expect to run the incident bridge, decide when to roll back, communicate status to non-technical stakeholders while the outage is still live, and then own the postmortem and its corrective actions until they are actually shipped rather than logged and quietly forgotten.
