The Team

We are the Wildfire Infrastructure team. Our engineering team is at the core of our products – deliver the best of security services on the cloud to prevent cyberattacks. We are constantly innovating – challenging the way we, and the industry, think about cybersecurity. Our engineers don’t shy away from building products to solve problems no one has pursued before.

We define the industry, instead of waiting for directions. We need individuals who feel comfortable in ambiguity, excited by the prospect of a challenge, and empowered by the unknown risks facing our everyday lives that are only enabled by a secure digital environment.

Job Summary

We are seeking a visionary Principal Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap, system architecture, and core execution for our WF500 appliance platform. In this role, you will define the next-generation architecture for high-volume, low-latency appliance-to-cloud security workflows. You will serve as the technical authority across teams - solving deep distributed systems challenges, mentoring senior engineering talent, and partnering with product leadership to shape the long-term vision of our platform.

We want passionate engineers who love to design and code world-class security services on Cloud Providers. Engineers who bring new ideas in all facets of software development, individual contributors who want to expand their skill set, take ownership of their feature areas and who are driven to solve problems at every level. Collaboration and teamwork are at the foundation of our culture and we need engineers who can communicate at a high level and work well with others towards achieving a common goal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Appliance Platform Architecture: Lead the architectural design and evolution of the WF500 appliance software stack, maximizing hardware throughput, resource efficiency, and sub-second execution.
  • Low-Level Systems & OS Engineering: Architect and optimize the underlying Linux base platform—focusing on kernel tuning, driver/system interfaces, daemon management, and high-performance local inter-process communication (IPC).
  • High-Throughput Data Pipeline: Define messaging and caching strategies (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis) tuned specifically for low-latency, high-concurrency local execution within appliance resource bounds.
  • Code & Engineering Standards: Set the benchmark for production-grade code in Python, Go and C establishing strict memory management, low-latency execution patterns, and robust CI/CD practices across teams.
  • System Resilience & Debugging: Serve as the final escalation point for diagnosing deep-seated system bugs, memory leaks, race conditions, and performance bottlenecks across hardware/software boundaries.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Guide Senior and Staff engineers through rigorous design reviews, technical decision matrices, and best practices for system-level programming.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 10 - 15+ years of hands-on experience architecting and scaling system software, embedded Linux platforms, or security/network appliances.
  • Deep Systems Programming: Mastery in Python and Go , combined with strong hands-on experience in C for low-level systems and platform engineering.
  • Linux Kernel & OS Internals: Deep expertise in Linux platform internals—including memory management, process scheduling, system calls, network stack tuning, and shell/system scripting.
  • Appliance & On-Prem Distributed Systems: Proven experience building high-throughput, event-driven architectures ( Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis ) and containerized microservices ( Kubernetes/Docker ) running directly on-premise or on bare-metal hardware.
  • Root-Cause Dissection: Elite ability to dissect, debug, and resolve performance bottlenecks, race conditions, and failures in complex distributed environments processing mission-critical transactions.
  • Cloud & Security Expertise: Advanced knowledge of Cloud Computing architecture (AWS/GCP/OCI/Azure), Zero Trust security frameworks, and secure appliance communication protocols.
  • Architectural Rationale & Communication: Exceptional ability to clearly defend complex system trade-offs (e.g., memory vs. CPU efficiency, synchronous vs. asynchronous execution) to both technical teams and executive leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with network/security appliance architectures (e.g., Firewalls, SASE, SD-WAN, DPI, or packet processing engines).
  • Experience utilizing AI tools/LLM workflows to automate system diagnostics and dev-tooling.
  • Proven track record of designing active/active or active/passive high-availability (HA) clustering, state synchronization, and failover mechanisms for physical or virtual appliances.
  • Proven track record of architecting seamless data and schema migrations during major software upgrades without causing service downtime or data corruption on localized stores

Our Commitment

We’re trailblazers that dream big, take risks, and challenge cybersecurity’s status quo. It’s simple: we can’t accomplish our mission without diverse teams innovating, together.

We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations for all qualified individuals with a disability. If you require assistance or accommodation due to a disability or special need, please contact us at accommodations@paloaltonetworks.com .
