About the role

Our mission is to evolve the platform architecture and workflows that let Insurance scale across more customers, more products, and new markets, and to close the gap between AI capabilities built centrally and their reliable adoption in production.

As a Staff Software Engineer - Insurance, you will be a senior technical leader across two connected fronts: diagnosing and evolving our service architecture as the platform scales, and leading the rollout of AI/agentic tooling across the team's engineering workflow, from spec and code generation to testing and validation.

You will operate at platform scale, building infrastructure and practices other teams depend on, while partnering closely with Product, Data, Security, Compliance, and Insurance partners. You'll be part of a lean, entrepreneurial team that delivers outsized business impact while protecting millions of customers, sitting at the intersection of embedded insurance, Nu's most important customer surfaces, and our insurer partners. This team is also one of the earliest adopters of agentic engineering within Nubank, putting you at the center of how that transformation actually happens.

You’ll be responsible for

  • Diagnosing and evolving our platform architecture to remove constraints on scale, supporting a growing user base, expanding product portfolio, and global expansion.
  • Providing AI-first engineering leadership, setting the standards and practices for how the team builds and evolves with AI/agentic tooling.
  • Cutting through ambiguity, surfacing trade-offs and aligning cross-functional teams (Product, Data, Security, Compliance, Insurance partners) around clear outcomes.
  • Ensuring observability for AI systems and platform services in production (tracing, logging, alerting).
  • Mentoring engineers on technical approach across both architecture and AI/agentic best practices, raising the team's execution level over time.
  • Evaluating and incorporating both internal (Nubank) and external AI tools and agents into our workflows, based on what best fits our needs.
  • Partnering with Nubank's central AI/platform teams and other BUs to share learnings and stay aligned on tooling direction.
  • Enabling more Nubankers to safely contribute to AI-powered products over time (engineers and non-engineers)
  • Embedding responsible, auditable practices in everything shipped, across platform and AI systems alike, per applicable regulations and internal risk standards.

We are looking for a person who has

Required

  • Proven technical leadership as a senior/staff engineer delivering high-impact, large-scale software systems in production.
  • Track record of mentoring and uplifting peers on technical approach and AI-native workflows.
  • Strong systems/platform engineering experience: architecture, CI/CD, test automation, able to evolve infrastructure to support reliable adoption of new technology.
  • Genuine interest and foundational knowledge of AI/LLM concepts, ready to build hands-on fluency with our agentic tooling.
  • Ownership mindset for rolling out AI/agentic tooling across a team, driving adoption of testing, CI/CD validation, and evaluation practices, not just personal use.
  • Strong full-stack thinking: ability to design maintainable codebases and APIs that bridge model inference/orchestration layers with user-facing surfaces.
  • Experience navigating ambiguous, cross-functional projects that require coordination across multiple business units and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated strategic acumen, linking technical initiatives to business drivers such as operational efficiency, risk, and customer acquisition or engagement.
  • Experience in fintech or other regulated industries (e.g., financial services, insurance, payments) or similarly complex domains.
  • Advanced English for daily collaboration in a global environment.

Nice to Have

  • AI-first mindset with professional experience implementing LLMs, generative AI, agentic patterns and/or RAG systems in real-world products.
  • Solid understanding of prompt engineering, tool calling, context management, and agent loops, with ability to contribute to shared agent libraries and commands.
  • Experience building or contributing to automated test/CI-CD evaluation frameworks that catch and fix failures with minimal human intervention.
  • Background in insurance or embedded insurance products.
  • Experience scaling products across international markets and languages.
  • Familiarity with Portuguese and/or Spanish to read or review customer-facing copy (optional).
  • Prior experience in AI-first startups or big-tech environments with strong AI/ML teams.

  • São Paulo, Buenos Aires
