In 1954, architect Eero Saarinen designed a radically modern bank branch for Irwin Union in Columbus, Indiana. With glass walls, no private offices, and a floor plan that invited openness, it embodied a new kind of transparency in finance. The building was surrounded by trees, furnished by Herman Miller, and featured rustic brick flooring. Today, that space is a conference center, and that spirit of design-forward thinking in banking* feels all but extinct.
Mercury believes that level of care and craft in design has been lost in modern finance, and we’re building products that bring it back. Cards and credit are built on complicated systems and inherited conventions, but our customers shouldn’t have to experience that complexity. We believe thoughtful design can turn something traditionally transactional into an experience that feels simple, intuitive, and distinctly Mercury.
We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our Cards & Credit team. You’ll tackle complex product problems, question inherited assumptions, and shape experiences that help startups spend less time banking and more time building.
In this role, you’ll:
- Own meaningful Cards & Credit product problems from initial framing through shipped experience, partnering closely with Product and Engineering to understand the problem and shape what we should build.
- Turn complicated systems, requirements, and edge cases into experiences that feel remarkably simple and intuitive.
- Work across the entire design stack, from framing problems and exploring concepts to workflows, detailed interactions, visual design, prototyping, and final implementation.
- Explore broadly and design from first principles, questioning inherited patterns and assumptions when a better answer may exist.
- Bring a high level of interaction and visual craft to the Cards & Credit experience, from the structure of a workflow to the details of hierarchy, typography, motion, and state.
- Collaborate with Mercury’s Brand team on physical cards and related products, creating a cohesive experience between the objects our customers hold and the product experiences surrounding them.
- Develop a deep understanding of our customers, communicate the reasoning behind your decisions clearly, and work through tradeoffs with your partners to arrive at the strongest solution.
What you’ll bring:
- A strong portfolio of product work demonstrating exceptional product thinking, interaction design, and visual craft.
- An ability to understand complicated systems and turn them into simple, thoughtful product experiences.
- Deep curiosity about why a problem exists before deciding how to solve it, with a willingness to question assumptions and work from first principles.
- Real ambition for the work itself. You want to do the best work of your career here, and you’re energized by being surrounded by people who hold themselves to the same bar.
- A high bar for craft and the judgment to know where additional thought and detail meaningfully improve an experience.
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and taking ownership without waiting for every requirement to be defined.
- A habit of exploring multiple possibilities, prototyping ideas, and changing direction when a stronger solution emerges.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to articulate your thinking, explain tradeoffs, and build conviction with Product and Engineering partners.
- Deep care for customers and an ambition to create products that don’t just function well, but genuinely make their lives better.
You don’t need a background in banking, fintech, cards, or credit. We care much more about whether you’ve demonstrated the ability to understand complicated problems and turn them into simple, thoughtful product experiences.
Complexity can be learned. The instinct to find its essence is harder to teach.
