The management track is a different job, not a promotion from engineering
The daily work becomes meetings, hiring, performance conversations and unblocking other people. The feedback loop that used to close in an afternoon now closes in a quarter. Some people find that far more satisfying and some find it hollow. The only reliable way to tell is to run a team temporarily before committing.
