Titles are not comparable between companies and compensation mostly is
A staff engineer at one company maps to a senior at another and a lead at a third. When you are evaluating a move, compare the scope described in the role and the total compensati…

Working on an old system is not a career dead end, and it is often where the leverage is
Anyone can add a feature to a greenfield project. Making a fifteen-year-old system safe to change - tests, boundaries, an escape route for the worst module - is a rarer skill and …

Learning a new framework every quarter feels like progress and rarely compounds
Underneath the framework churn, the durable things are data modelling, concurrency, network behaviour, and how to debug something you did not write. Time spent there stays valuabl…

Contracting pays more per day and costs you the things employment quietly provides: paid leave, notice periods
Training budget, and stability between engagements. Run the numbers on a year rather than a day rate, including the weeks you expect to be unbooked. It is a good deal for some peo…

The management track is a different job, not a promotion from engineering
The daily work becomes meetings, hiring, performance conversations and unblocking other people. The feedback loop that used to close in an afternoon now closes in a quarter. Some …

The skills that get you hired and the skills that make you effective overlap less than they should
Interview preparation is a distinct activity, and being excellent at your job does not exempt you from it. Treat a job search as a temporary second discipline, do it deliberately …

The gap between mid and senior is rarely about knowing more technology
It is about scope of ownership and how much certainty other people can take from your work. A senior engineer takes a vague problem, decides what to build, tells the team what the…

Welcome to Engineering Careers
This is for the questions that sit above the code: whether to specialise or stay broad, when a stack change is worth it, what separates mid from senior, and when to move rather th…

Changing stacks costs less than people expect after five years of experience and more than they expect in the first two
Early on, depth compounds - the second year in one ecosystem is worth more than two first years in two. Later, the transferable part is most of the job, and the new syntax is a fe…

Most promotion cases are lost on evidence, not on merit
Keep a running document of what you shipped, what it changed, and who else it helped, updated monthly while you still remember the details. When the review arrives you are assembl…

Small company or large is a question about what you want to learn next
A small team gives you breadth, ownership, and no safety net. A large one gives you scale, specialists to learn from, and processes that will frustrate you. Neither is the mature …

Remote work suits people who are already good at writing things down, and punishes people who are not
If decisions in your team happen verbally and are never recorded, remote will feel isolating and political no matter how good the video setup is. The team's documentation habits p…

A note that belongs in a careers space: capability is not the usual reason people stall. Exhaustion is
If every task feels twice as heavy as it did last year, that is information about your workload or your environment, not evidence about your ability. Deal with it as a real constr…

Code review is where a lot of senior reputation is actually built
Reviews that explain the reasoning, distinguish blocking issues from preferences, and approve when something is good enough make you someone people want to work with. Reviews that…

Open source contributions help hiring less than people hope
But a specific kind helps a lot: a sustained contribution to a project the team already uses. One merged fix in a dependency your interviewer maintains is worth more than fifty gr…
