Technical Solutions Lead, Biochar and Durable Carbon Removal
Location: Gurgaon, India
Type: Full-Time
Experience: 4-9 years
About Varaha
Varaha is the largest carbon removal developer in Asia, working with more than 200,000 smallholder farmers. Trusted by brands like Google and Microsoft, we combine an exceptional team with deeply impactful work. Through regenerative agriculture, afforestation, and biochar, our projects remove carbon while simultaneously restoring soils, protecting biodiversity, and improving livelihoods far beyond our project boundaries. We are a profitable, rapidly growing company backed by premier global private equity and top-tier venture capital. Our roots are in India, and our impact is global.
The Opportunity
Before they sign, buyers send technical diligence packs that run to sixty questions: pyrolysis conditions at each facility, treatment of feedstock transport emissions, what the permanence figure rests on, why the uncertainty deduction sits where it does. The deal moves when those answers are good and fast.
This role owns them.
Biochar is the fastest-moving durable removal category in the market and Varaha runs one of the largest portfolios in it. Our buyers are technically serious and will not sign until they understand the tonne. Ratings agencies review our projects in detail and publish what they find.
You become the technical authority on the commercial side: the person who can explain how our facilities work, why the carbon accounting holds, and what the numbers do and do not support. Over time the same coverage extends to enhanced rock weathering, where we work with the most demanding buyers in the market.
We are deliberately open on background. You might have run a pyrolysis or biomass operation, worked in process engineering at a cement, sugar, paper, or fertiliser company, done life cycle assessment work, or built the sustainability case inside an agri-conglomerate. What matters is that you can hold a mass balance in your head and explain it to a non-engineer.
Reporting To: CCO
Key Responsibilities
- Answer buyer diligence directly. Permanence, feedstock and pyrolysis parameters, life cycle emissions, measurement uncertainty, deduction logic, additionality. You handle most questions yourself and escalate only the ones that need project team input. Your reliance on the project team decreases over time, and you feed buyer requirements back to them so project design improves with every round of questions.
- Run our side of the ratings process. Sylvera, BeZero, Calyx. Prepare the submission, handle the analyst questions, and argue with evidence when a finding is wrong.
- Cover the impact side. Buyers ask what our projects do for farmers and communities, and they take the answer as seriously as the carbon accounting. You turn evidence on incomes, livelihoods, and co-benefits into claims we can defend, often from limited data, and you say plainly where the data is thin.
- Turn protocol into sales material. Registry methodologies become one-pagers, proposal annexes, buyer FAQs, and objection handling the commercial team can use in a meeting.
- Train the sellers so they clear the first two layers of technical questions without you, and know exactly when to pull you in.
- Join the sales calls. When a buyer conversation turns technical, you are in the room and you carry the answer, without pulling the project team in.
- Watch the rules change. Registry and methodology updates land regularly. You tell the commercial team what they mean before a buyer does.
Qualifications
- 4-9 years in a technical role where you had to make your work understandable to people who would not read the underlying data. Pyrolysis, biomass, bioenergy, chemical or process engineering, materials science, life cycle assessment, and agri-processing all qualify.
- A degree in science or engineering.
- Written English that a Fortune 500 sustainability lead reads and trusts. Most of what you produce is written, so we ask for samples.
- Real appetite for technical detail. You will work through hundreds of pages of registry documentation, and the people who do well here enjoy that.
- Skilled at using AI tools to digest dense material and produce strong first drafts fast.
- The ability to give a defensible answer when the data is incomplete, with the limits stated plainly.
- Honesty about risk. Benefits, costs, and caveats presented straight, in both directions.
Preferred
- Familiarity with Puro.earth or Isometric methodologies, or the appetite to learn them fast.
- Experience on the receiving end of an audit, verification, or ratings review.
- Life cycle assessment or carbon accounting work.
- Any exposure to enhanced rock weathering.
- Confident enough on a call to lead a session with a US or European buyer alone.
Why This Role Matters
Durable carbon removal only scales if the buyer believes the tonne. That belief is built one technical answer at a time. Whoever takes this role sets how one of the largest biochar portfolios in the world explains itself to the market.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and meaningful equity through ESOPs.
- Direct exposure to the largest corporate carbon buyers in the world.
- Room to grow into Head of Carbon Science and Solutions across all four of our pathways, or into a commercial seat.
- Support for learning and professional development.
- A culture of undogmatic, unbureaucratic creativity and collaboration.
