Free course, paid exam — or both free?

Free certifications: which ones are actually free at the end

Half the certifications marketed as free are free to study and paid to certify. Microsoft will teach you for nothing and charge US$165 at the exam. NPTEL’s IIT courses cost nothing until the proctored paper. freeCodeCamp charges nothing at any point. That distinction is the whole page.

How we keep this current. 8 entries. Every link on this page is re-fetched by a checker that follows redirects and fails on a dead one; anything it cannot reach keeps its old date and stays on the review list rather than being quietly restamped. Most recent check: 24 Jul 2026. Oldest entry on the page: 24 Jul 2026. Our editorial standards explain what we refuse to publish.

Short version

Want a credential that costs nothing, ever

freeCodeCamp or HubSpot Academy

Both state plainly that the certificate itself is free, not just the course. freeCodeCamp is a registered non-profit and says so; HubSpot describes its certifications as completely free and online.

Want something an Indian employer recognises on sight

NPTEL

It is run by the IITs and IISc under the Ministry of Education, with 3.79 crore enrolments and 75.6 lakh exam registrations. Nothing else on this list carries that weight with an Indian hiring manager — but the certificate requires passing a paid, in-person proctored exam.

Are chasing a cloud job

Microsoft Learn or AWS, and budget for the exam

The training is genuinely free on both. The credential is not: Microsoft states US$165 for Associate and Expert exams, priced to local currency. Treat the free course as the study material, not the qualification.

Are in marketing or sales

Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy

These are the two credentials that agencies and employers in that field actually look for, both are free end to end, and both take hours rather than months.

Every option, with the catch

Ordered by how often we would actually recommend them, not by price or popularity. The “not for” line on each one is the part worth reading twice.

  1. 1

    freeCodeCamp

    freecodecamp.org

A donor-funded charity running a full web-development curriculum whose certifications require building and submitting working projects.

    Free tier
Everything, including the credential. Its own words: every aspect is 100% free — the courses, the projects, even the certifications.
    Price
Free at every step. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with no paid tier.
    Best for
A self-taught developer who needs something concrete on a CV, since each certification is earned by completing five projects rather than a quiz.
    Not for
Signalling to a conservative employer. It is well known among engineers and much less so to non-technical Indian HR screens, which weigh a university or vendor name more heavily.
    From India
No payment step at all, which removes the card-in-dollars problem that stops most Indian learners at the exam stage of every other option here.
    Worth knowing
Each certification is stated at around 300 hours of learning, and the projects are the assessment — you cannot pass it by recognising the right answer, which is exactly why it means something.

  2. 2

The Government of India’s online learning initiative run by the seven IITs and IISc Bangalore, with certification through a proctored in-person exam.

    Free tier
Enrolling and learning are free across 3,200+ courses. Weekly assignments are part of the free portion; the certificate is not.
    Price
The exam requires registration and payment. We could not read the fee — the registration and exam-fee pages both 404’d — so we are not quoting a number.
    Best for
Indian candidates who want a credential a domestic employer immediately recognises, taught by IIT and IISc faculty.
    Not for
Anyone who cannot attend in person. Certification requires a proctored exam at a centre, and you need at least 40 in both the assignment average and the final exam to pass, so it is a real commitment rather than a click-through.
    From India
The most India-specific programme on this page by a wide margin: Ministry of Education funding, IIT Madras administration, and its own counters showing 3.79 crore enrolments and 75.6 lakh exam registrations.
    Worth knowing
The pass criteria are published as a rule rather than a promise — average assignment score of at least 40 and final exam score of at least 40, both out of 100. You know before you start exactly what earning it takes.

    HubSpot Academy

    academy.hubspot.com

Free marketing, sales and service certifications from HubSpot, aimed at the practical skills its own customers hire for.

    Free tier
Both the courses and the certifications, described on the site as completely free and online.
    Price
Free. No paid tier for the certifications.
    Best for
Marketing and sales roles, especially at agencies, where the inbound and content certifications are widely understood.
    Not for
Technical roles, and not for depth. The individual certifications run three to eight hours, so they demonstrate familiarity rather than expertise.
    From India
No payment step and no regional restriction. Widely listed by Indian digital-marketing agencies as a preferred credential.
    Worth knowing
Course lengths are stated up front — eight hours for content marketing, three for inbound — so you can finish one over a weekend and have it on LinkedIn by Monday.

  4. 4

Google’s certification programme for its own advertising and analytics products, aimed at people who use those tools at work.

    Free tier
Free training and free certification. The Google Ads track is described as free training for every kind of advertiser.
    Price
Free. No price appears anywhere on the certification pages.
    Best for
Anyone whose job involves running Google Ads or reading Analytics, where the certification is close to a hiring prerequisite at agencies.
    Not for
Career changers hoping a badge alone opens doors. It certifies you can operate Google’s tools; it says nothing about whether you can run a campaign that works.
    From India
Free and unrestricted, and Indian performance-marketing agencies routinely ask for it by name.
    Worth knowing
Google frames the outcome honestly — achieving certified status signals expertise to the industry or simply gives you confidence in the tool. That is a more modest claim than the category usually makes.

    Microsoft Learn

    learn.microsoft.com

Microsoft’s self-directed training platform, paired with a separate paid certification programme for Azure, Microsoft 365 and Power Platform.

    Free tier
All the training and the learning paths. The certification exam is a separate, paid step.
    Price
Associate and Expert exams typically cost US$165, priced to currency values in specific countries — so an Indian candidate pays a local figure. Renewals are free annually; failed exams are explicitly non-refundable.
    Best for
Anyone in or heading into a Microsoft-stack role, where the certification maps directly onto job postings.
    Not for
Anyone treating it as a free credential. The study is free and the badge is not, and there is no refund if you fail on the day.
    From India
Microsoft states exams are priced according to local currency, so the Indian exam fee is lower than the US$165 headline. Confirm the rupee figure at booking.
    Worth knowing
The credentials page carries attributed quotes from named enterprise employers, including managers at Koç Holding and EPAM — actual recognition evidence rather than the usual unnamed "leading companies".

    AWS Skill Builder

    skillbuilder.aws

Amazon’s training platform for AWS, with a free course library and a paid subscription that unlocks hands-on labs and official practice exams.

    Free tier
500+ free courses, per AWS’s own announcement. Hands-on labs, AWS Jam, Cloud Quest and the official practice exams sit behind the subscription.
    Price
The individual subscription is $29 a month or $299 a year. The AWS certification exam fee is charged separately and was not stated on any AWS page we could read.
    Best for
Anyone preparing for an AWS certification, where the free course library genuinely covers the syllabus.
    Not for
Practising cheaply. The parts that actually prepare you for the exam — the labs and the official practice tests — are the parts you have to pay $29 a month for.
    From India
Widely required in Indian cloud and DevOps job postings. Pricing is in USD; the certification exam fee is billed separately again.
    Worth knowing
AWS publishes its own credential counts — more than 1.42 million active certifications held by 1.05 million people — which tells you honestly how much a single certification differentiates you.

Google Skills (formerly Cloud Skills Boost)

    skills.google

Google’s hands-on cloud learning platform, rebranded from Cloud Skills Boost, built around labs that run against real Google Cloud projects.

    Free tier
A no-cost subscription programme grants 35 credits a month for hands-on learning. Whether skill badges themselves are free beyond those credits is not stated anywhere we could find.
    Price
No subscription price or currency figure appears on the site. The separate Google Cloud certification exam fee is not published there either.
    Best for
Practising on real Google Cloud infrastructure rather than reading about it, which is the one thing a video course cannot give you.
    Not for
Anyone who needs to know the cost. A monthly credit allowance is a usage budget, not a free tier, and the site never says what happens when you exhaust it.
    From India
No India-specific pricing or content was visible. Google Cloud roles are growing in Indian job postings but remain behind AWS and Azure in volume.
    Worth knowing
The old cloudskillsboost.google address now redirects here — worth knowing if a training plan or a manager’s email points you at the old name.

    IBM SkillsBuild

    skillsbuild.org

IBM’s free learning platform for students and career changers, covering AI, cybersecurity, data and cloud, delivered largely through educational institutions.

    Free tier
IBM states the learning is 100% free. It does not separately state that the credential is free, so we cannot confirm that the way we can for freeCodeCamp.
    Price
No price appears anywhere on the site.
    Best for
Students, particularly through a college that already partners with IBM, where the material is pitched at exactly that level.
    Not for
Experienced professionals. The platform is built around early-career and student pathways, and the depth reflects that.
    From India
No India-specific pricing or programme content was visible on the pages we could read, though the institutional model — IBM cites 20,000 post-secondary institutions worldwide — reaches Indian colleges.
    Worth knowing
Distribution is the differentiator rather than the content: it reaches learners through institutions rather than expecting them to find it, which is why it shows up in Indian college training programmes.

What we checked

  • — Every programme was opened on the date shown, and the specific thing we looked for was whether payment is required at the certificate or exam step.
  • — Where a course platform would not render — several of these are single-page apps that show a plain fetch nothing — we used the same company’s own primary pages instead, and the entry says so.
  • — Exam fees are quoted from the vendor’s own FAQ or announcement, in the currency shown. Nothing is converted.
  • — We did not sit any exam. Recognition claims are limited to what the vendor itself publishes, such as named partner employers.

What we could not verify

  • — The NPTEL exam fee. Its own registration and exam-fee pages both returned 404 to us, so although the FAQ confirms you must register and pay for the exam, we could not read the amount and will not repeat a figure from elsewhere.
  • — The AWS certification exam fee. The Skill Builder subscription price is confirmed at $29 a month or $299 a year, but no AWS page we could read stated what the actual certification exam costs.
  • — Whether Google Cloud skill badges are free. What we could confirm is a no-cost programme granting 35 monthly credits; the site never states plainly that badges or the underlying certification exam are free, and that ambiguity is the honest answer.
  • — IBM SkillsBuild states the learning is 100% free but does not separately say the credential is, so we cannot confirm the badge is free the way we can for freeCodeCamp.
  • — Infosys Springboard is missing from this list. Its own domain returned nothing renderable on every attempt and infosys.com returned HTTP 403, so everything we could find about it came from third-party summaries. We do not list a programme we could not open.
  • — Cisco’s netacad.com is also unreadable to an automated request, returning only a page title — which is why its Skills for All programme is not listed either, despite Cisco’s newsroom publishing strong figures for it.

Who paid for a place on this page

Nobody. OnJob has no affiliate relationships, no referral commissions and no paid placements on this page — the outbound links carry no tracking parameters and earn us nothing. That is enforced in code, not just promised: the sponsored-host list our link pipeline checks against (src/lib/externalLinks.ts) is empty, so the day a link here does become paid it is tagged rel="sponsored" automatically. We do rank our own product where it genuinely fits, and we say so on the entry rather than hiding it.

Questions people actually ask

Which certifications are completely free, including the certificate?

freeCodeCamp, which states in its own words that the courses, the projects and even the certifications are free; HubSpot Academy, which describes its certifications as completely free and online; and Google Skillshop for Ads and Analytics. Everything else on this page charges somewhere — usually at the exam, which is the step people forget to budget for.

Are free certifications actually worth anything to employers?

They are worth what the issuer’s name is worth in your field, and nothing more. Google Skillshop carries real weight at a performance-marketing agency, NPTEL carries real weight with an Indian engineering employer, and a generic completion badge from a content mill carries none. The credential is a proxy for the issuer’s reputation, not for your ability.

How much does an NPTEL certificate cost?

Learning is free and the certificate is not — NPTEL’s own FAQ says you must register and pay for an in-person proctored exam, and you need at least 40 out of 100 in both the assignment average and the final exam to pass. We could not read the fee itself because NPTEL’s registration and exam-fee pages both returned 404 to us, so check the current amount on the course page before enrolling.

Is the AWS or Azure certification exam free?

No. The training is free on both. Microsoft states Associate and Expert exams typically cost US$165, priced to local currency, with no refund if you fail. AWS publishes a $29 a month subscription for labs and practice exams, and charges the certification exam separately — a figure we could not find stated on any AWS page.

Which free certification is best for a fresher in India?

NPTEL if you want a name an Indian employer knows immediately, and you can get to an exam centre. freeCodeCamp if you are heading into development and want project work to show rather than a badge to list. For marketing or sales, Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy are both free to the end and are asked for by name in Indian agency job postings.
