SSC requires a completed Bachelor's degree at the time of applying, so a 12th pass certificate alone does not meet the eligibility bar for this exam. Candidates in their final year of graduation are usually permitted to apply provisionally, but they must produce proof of having passed before document verification, failing which their candidature gets cancelled at that stage.

SSC has no fixed cap on the number of attempts; candidates may apply every year as long as they meet the prescribed age and educational qualification on the notified cut-off date. The real constraint is the upper age limit tied to the chosen post, since crossing it without an applicable relaxation category makes further attempts for that post ineligible.

SSC deducts marks for wrong answers at both stages. Tier-I applies a penalty of 0.50 marks per incorrect response across all four sections, while Tier-II also applies negative marking, though the exact penalty differs by paper and section. Candidates are advised to attempt only questions they are reasonably confident about to protect their overall score.

SSC applicants list post preferences in order while filling the application form, and final allocation is based on merit combined with those stated preferences. Once a post is allotted against a given preference, it generally cannot be changed later, even if the candidate subsequently fails to meet a post-specific physical, medical, or educational requirement tied to that particular role.

SSC's computer-based test is offered mainly in English and Hindi, except for the English Comprehension section, which is tested only in English. Regional language options are generally not available for this particular exam, unlike some other Staff Selection Commission recruitment tests, so candidates should be comfortable attempting quantitative, reasoning, and general awareness questions in either language.
