SSC enforces minimum physical standards that vary slightly by category and gender, generally requiring a minimum height around 170cm for male general candidates and 157cm for female candidates, with relaxations for Scheduled Tribes and hill-area residents. Chest measurement and expansion requirements also apply for male candidates during the Physical Standard Test conducted by the recruiting force.

SSC applicants indicate force and state preferences during the application process, but final allocation depends on merit, category, vacancy availability, and domicile requirements for state-specific posts. Secretariat Security Force vacancies are filled on an all-India basis, while other forces fill vacancies according to state and Union Territory-wise allotments, so stated preferences are not guaranteed to be honoured.

SSC's Computer Based Examination does carry negative marking for incorrect answers, so candidates should avoid guessing questions they are unsure about. The exam tests general intelligence, reasoning, general knowledge, elementary mathematics, and language skills, and only candidates who clear the qualifying cut-off proceed to the physical and medical stages of selection.

SSC has no cap on the number of attempts; a candidate can apply every recruitment cycle as long as they satisfy the age limit of 18 to 23 years, adjusted for applicable category relaxation, on the notified cut-off date. Given the relatively short eligible age window, most candidates get only a few realistic attempts overall.

SSC's written exam is offered in English, Hindi, and 13 regional languages including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. This broad language access reflects the exam's nationwide, largely rural recruitment base, since many applicants come from regions where English or Hindi may not be their first language.
